Raising money to help a Vermont family who lost their 11-year old to Leukemia

Getting a cancer diagnosis is certainly something that shakes your faith. But, being an active, energetic, 11-year old boy and being diagnosed with Leukemia is somehow even more devastating.

But in April 2011, Katie and Jackie Gorton, Sr. received the devastating news their son Jacob had Leukemia. The Gorton Family pulled together to help Jacob, who went through several hopeful remissions, and two bone marrow transplants over the course of his four year battle.  But sadly, his courageous battle came to an end when Jacob lost his fight on Mother's Day, May 10th.

Although Jacob’s battle was over, the family was still in a stressful situation as they tried to figure out how to get Jacob home to Vermont from St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee to properly lay Jacob to rest. In order to care for him, Jacob’s parents hadn’t been working so they could devote as much time as possible to his care. Needless to say, money is extremely tight.

Burlington Labs employees heard about the Gorton Family’s plight and wanted to help. They decided to donate the funds received from the company’s monthly “Dress Down Day,” a monthly fundraiser employees contribute to for the privilege to wear jeans to work, to the Gorton Family’s funeral expenses. They raised $845 for the family, one of the company’s largest fundraisers to date.

Our thoughts are with the Gorton Family as they try to pick up the pieces, and we will keep Jacob in our prayers.
